A "bite"
about db sweets cake artist donna
block...
Donna grew up on a small farm in Central NJ where she filled her days with
endless artistic pursuits: sewing, drawing, needlework, painting, baking. Those closest to her always knew she'd end up doing something interesting
later in life. Now that she's all grown up, Donna has done just that by combining her childhood creative interests with
art and culinary school backgrounds to create the "yummy" job that she has today as a Cake Artist. After earning a B.F.A. in Fabric Styling from The Fashion Institute
Of Technology, NYC she enjoyed a fast and furious career in the fashion industry employed both in NYC and Europe as
a Textile Designer /Stylist and as a globetrotting Color and Trend Forecaster. During her fashion career, Donna would
often be invited to industry shows and events around the world, to share her inspirational, forward-thinking visual presentations
and to speak of trends and conceptual design ideas for the fashion and related industries. She consulted for and created
color and trend design directives for a long list of companies, was often interviewed and quoted in the press and was highly
regarded as an expert in her field. Donna chose to leave the frenzy of the fashion world to pursue another of her passions:
Pastry. She received a Grand Diploma in Pastry
Arts from The French Culinary Institute, NYC in 2000. Then in 2001, shortly after the birth of her first child, her
custom crafted cake company, db sweets was also born. As
a Cake Artist, Donna is known for creating edible works of art that are eclectic, unexpected and unique. She relishes
the challenge of creating random, odd objects in cake and sugar and often mixes whimsical combinations of colors, patterns
and graphic elements into her designs. Donna's amazing cakes have graced tables at events both large and small and are
often found anywhere from tiny tots' backyard birthday parties to grand affairs at the Ritz-Carlton in New York City.
Her artistic style tends to attract the more creative client as many of them have come from fashion, art, film and television
including America's beloved television personality, Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report, Academy Award-winning Director,
Rob Marshall and World-Reknown Op Artist, Richard Anuszkiewicz. Donna and her cakes have been featured in The Journal
News, Westchester Magazine and The New York Times. Donna lives and bakes in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn,
New York with her husband, two young daughters and beloved dachshund.
